Nguyen Dieu Thuy

Thuy was born in Ho Chi Minh city in 1962. After graduating from the Conservatoire de Musique as a violinist, she embarked on her painting career in 1991. Her work has since been included in many Exhibits in Asia, Europe and North America. She is a member of the Fine Arts Association of Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam.

Her themes involve the traditional aspects of Vietnamese life, expressed in a clear, modern style; women in traditional dress depicted in crisp colours and uncluttered compositions. The paint is treated with a light touch, allowing the subjects a delicacy that shines from the canvas. As they go about their occupations, in an environment free from external influences, Thuy captures the eternal natures of these women.

“Nowadays, because of the strong influence of Western cultures on Asian societies, Vietnamese women are barely able to maintain their traditional way of life and thinking.”

Thuy also produces semi-abstract paintings of bowls, houses, aspects of Vietnamese existence, suffusing her images with a sense of spirituality, respecting the objects and the manner in which they are incorporated into everyday life. “All life begins from the earth. The bowl owns its humble existence to the Mother Earth. Give it a breath of life, since it has a reason for being. Each being has its own space in the cosmos. Things, also, have theirs.”
